From Shigatse we took the Friendship Highway towards Kathmandu, Nepal, but after some kilometres we turned left and left the brand new asfalt road and changed it for a horrible gravel trail: for some 90 kilometres! Nevertheless the fact that today I was feeling slightly better after having received a medicine recipe from our befriended Australian nurse/docter in Shangri-la, and the breathtaking scenery made up for the discomfort. It was very striking to see how the area is completely controlled by the Chinese military and that even every Tibetan must line up for the check posts and get registered in his own country in order to be allowed to continue.

Now we realised the travel agency had screwed us again.  They had said we wouldn't need a LandCruiser since by now all roads were nicely paved. Anyhow, the villages we drove through were fantastic, but it couldn't but draw my attention that all the children we saw did only one thing: hold up their hands and scream: "Money money money!"
