The touristic heart of Nepal's capital, Kathmandu, is Thamel. Though loaded with (great!) souvenir shops and restaurants it still is a great area to hang out. The souvenirs you'll find here are superior to any I've found elsewhere in Asia and really quite affordable. You can find any quality you want. This quarter of the city is always busy and you'll always spot a few tourists somewhere, but somehow it never bothered me.

We loaded ourselves with quite some souvenirs to send home here, which caused us some stress the other day, trying to send them right before having to take our flight to Delhi, India, while our friend Echo from Beijing was flying back to China.
